The declining interest for venture capital funding in semiconductors could cause engineers and other talent to migrate and seek careers outside the industry, warned Shahin Farshchi, an associate partner with Lux Capital Management.

This makes sense. It takes so much money to develop a modern SOC in 65 nm technology. Upward of $50M for a new start up. Essentially, you are telling your investor to take a chance on you and I'll tell youif we did or did not screw up after 18 months. this level of investment is only warranted for very high volume consumer devices. so, ask yourself this question: how many new SOC design will ship 10 million pcs over the lifetime of the product? That means each chip will amortize $5 of th einvestment. of course, the second chip and the third chip will cost less. But this is the game. I suspect more and more medium volume design will go the route of FPGA as a delivery platform for silicon systems. So, I don't think it is a VC problem. VC willinvest in areas with good return, high growth and not so much risk.
