If you believe the buzz, Atom is so good that it will displace ARM cores as king of the mobile world. Unfortunately, the buzz was extremely confused.

The investment would be huge with over 5 billions phones shipped based on ARM cores, a long legacy of software and tools usage and large ecosystem of developers and partners. It isn't as simple as developing a core; lots of people do that.

One key point that no one seems to realize is that the power numbers Intel quotes are just for Atom which is only the CPU. The ARM-based devices are single, integrated devicees that include the video, graphics, memory controller and peripherals. The Intel solution requires two chips and 4x the area against single-chip ARM-based solutions such as TI OMAP3. If you look at the system solution, the Intel Centrino Atom platform with memory and power management is 8x bigger and 4x the power of ARM-based solutions. They are not even close to being competitive in mobile devices with this generation.

Yes INDEED: why are not any Asian companies developing cores to compete against ARM? This is amazing: surely even a group of individuals can start desigining these cores? Of course they can: get on with it!
