Stunningly clear pictures are produced by LED-backlit LCD TVs, enabled by Dolby Laboratories' High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology. Unclear, though, is how much consumers will have to pay for that kind of picture quality.

Carbon Nanotube Backlights will deliver best quality picture at price competitive with CCFL. LED BLUs DOA. CNT BLU in '09 models. Sorry Dolby ... you're out of luck.

Edge illumination is the way LED backlighting has succeeded in smaller screen mass markets such as PDA, MP3 players and cell phones. Conventional LEDs aren't bright enough for larger screens, so people have tried expensive direct illumination architectures, which will keep LED backlighting out of mass markets. Luminus Devices showed an excellent 46" large screen edgelit BLUs that got the "Best Buzz" award from Insight Media, using their RGB PhlatLight LED technology. This required only 8 PhlatLight RGB modules. This is a much more elegant architecture that can overcome the high cost, high complexity, long-term uniformity and reliability issues of large screen backlights using thousands of conventional LEDs. Several companies will begin rolling out models using this technology later in 2008.

Yes, it will. LED manufacturers are concentrating on improving the efficiency and cost, as has been done in the past; an example is the flash memories. I expect by 2011, 60% of the Slim TV sets manufactured will be LED BLUs.

well personally I bought into the "hoopla" of LED backlighting and purchased the samsung LNT-5281F. Did not actually get to view picture quality at store(there were no display models at time,"specialty order") Viewed picture quality at home, distiguised a 5% difference in picture quality between LNT-5271F. Needless to say tried to get refund or exchange from vender unsuccessfuly. Waiting for BBB to reespond. Not worth the extra $ markup.
