Engineering careers—to some extent—mirror the model of the medieval times' Master Craftsman. A junior engineer is a just-graduated apprentice who has a lot of knowledge but few practical skills.

Does your company offer internships? --no--
Do they call a new graduate a junior engineer? --no--
Do they offer any sort of apprentice-like mentoring program? --no--

I wish companies would. I wish I had it. One indeed flounders.
There is no reward (corporate or personal) in mentoring, it seems, thus overworked engineers don't bother. It is a sad loss for the USA.

Should employers "invest" in mentoring when in all likelihood the junior engineer will leave within a few years?Are the egos of new grads, who in some cases know more about emerging technologies than their more senior coworkers, projecting an "attitude" that discourages others from mentoring them?
