Buffeted by the negative effects of poor and often erratic sales growth, weak leverage with customers, muddled pricing strategies and bloated operating costs, the EDA market is reeling as stockholders and private-equity investors shy away from even the better-managed companies.

There's typically a six-to-nine-month lag between a broad upturn in semiconductor revenues and those of EDA companies. Chipmakers often are hesitant to start spending again until they are sure the recovery is here, and often, they'll purchase expensive equipment they've put off buying in a downturn before buying software. As bleak as it may look, there'll still be a gradual growth. EDA vendors are starting to see and hear more optimism from customers. It's possible that smaller players could see benefits before the giants if they're offering a new technology or solving a problem incumbents have long neglected. There's plenty of competition. Despite the tough times for EDA overall, it also has produced a hotbed of new company formations. Some startups focus on one tool, hoping to get acquired by Cadence or Synopsys.
