Thank you for this excellent article. At the beginning of my career I thought that listing memberships in professional societies would somehow enhance my resume. Now, forty years later, I have reduced my memberships to just two which I think are worth the subscription fee . Most of the articles published in the journals of professional societies are exactly what Feerst called them. He must have been quite a guy. But I am sure that, unlike many academics and article writers I know, he can handle a scewdriver.
