The IC industry still pours billions of dollars annually into R&D. But in recent years, as costs have skyrocketed, chipmakers have been outsourcing more of their R&D requirements to consortia, silicon foundries and third-party vendors.

R&D is definitely a must for continuous improvement and up to date with the technology, however the direction and management's direction must be clear and the R&D team must also understand its marketing plan and stragedies. R&D nowadays should not focus mainly on its technological advancement, but must also stay dynamic and business orientated.
